Pastel and pencil on paper
51 x 38 x 2.5 cm framed
Cawston is an original pastel drawing which was drawn plein air as I was on my way through private land to draw some enormous red firs I had spotted from the road. The only way to get to them was through land owned by a sawmill but there was no one around so I stopped to draw this scene as the colours were extraordinary on this autumn day. The drawing is pastels on naturally coloured paper and I decided to leave the sky to the colour of the paper as it just worked as the sky was a weak blue grey and the soft beige of the paper was a similar tone. Layered colours and directional strokes are used to give depth to the forest and movement to the leaves and branches which lined the pathway.
