A large artwork painted from my memory of a walk in the woods on a grey autumn day. I wanted to capture the density versus the clear sky in this wood. I love to paint autumn and winter light as the shadows are deep and rich and I enjoy exploring the colour palette of our unique blue light in the UK. To obtain this I have used a limited palette of 5 colours including my favourite colour of all, Phthalocyanine Turquoise, which dominates the painting.
The portrait orientation gives rise and stature, height and strength to the tall trees which reach up towards the cool grey daylight above. The use of rich turquoises and rusts has given the wood a deep intensity which is broken only by pale silver birches, with their textural bark, and the light filtering through the branches.
This painting holds an abstracted quality yet retains a sense of reality. Looking up at the silhouetting of the branches set against the bright light of the sky, the painting is stylised and patterned.
Named after the song ‘Fill Your Heart’ by David Bowie.
