Lockdown Daily Exercise is painted with a limited palette of four colours in a depiction of the alley way near my home. It was an odd time when we were limited to being out for only an hour a day but I took it every day, walking around the lanes and footpaths near our house every day, becoming more and more familiar with every detail yet looking at them intensely like never before. I walked at varying times of day which translated into painting the alleyway and its beautiful tree tunnel many times over.
This painting captures an evening walk, everything doused in pink as the day’s heat begins to wane, the dusty hazy distance contrasting with the cool shade of the trees hanging over the path. I pay attention to light coming through leaves in an abstracted way, using the bokeh which occurs in photos as a starting point in particular in this painting.
