Description
Nocturnal Portent
oil on canvas
51 x 76 cm
A painting which I based on the natural phenomenon of the comet Neowise which could be seen in the sky during 2020.
‘Comets have inspired dread, fear, and awe in many different cultures and societies around the world and throughout time. They have been branded with such titles as “the Harbinger of Doom” and “the Menace of the Universe.” They have been regarded both as omens of disaster and messengers of the gods.’ Noah Goldman
The poignancy of the comet visiting during this particular year was something I wanted to connect to. I have been exploring night skies for some time, both going out and observing them and through my painting. I have also been experimenting with Ultramarine blue which I have used as the colour for the night sky in this painting, amongst others. The stars and comet are picked out in pinks and yellows, with a few new stars in pale blue. The foreground is deep dark and mysterious with only a few subtle highlights picked out, alluding to a puddled woodland path at night. The reflection of starts and the comet can be seen in the puddle.
Painted on a deep edged canvas with neatly painted dark edges, ready to hang.
