All Rivers Run to the Sea

Paintings are about life so they have to include a morsel of darkness behind the beauty or they don’t resonate as any kind of truth. I want them to inexplicably reach deep inside and touch on something you don’t want to acknowledge. Don’t worry, the beauty is still there to distract you back into the fantasy of contentment you have constructed.

Darkness is more easily reached through drawing; this drawing is particularly raw as I’d had a bad experience. It’s not difficult to understand, there’s no mystery or hidden meaning. I was scared.

“Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures.” – Henry Ward Beecher.
