Fritton Lake
oil on braced wood panel
42 x 29x 2cm
2026
After a day drawing on Fritton Estate in Norfolk, with permission of the land owner, I took a swim in the lake. As a child I spent many days there, as it used to be open to the public. Swimming in a lake, or broad, I like to take in the reflections of surrounding trees, and was particularly taken with this birch, growing right on the shore. It was a little windy that day so the reflections danced as small waves moved by.
I wanted to show the green colour of the lake, foliage, and reflected light all working in harmony, so I used a wet on wet technique, allowing the edges of each stroke to blur into its adjacent.
Painted on a braced wood panel, with bare wood edges with a few paint smudges.
