The Three Marks of Existence
oil on canvas (triptych)
76 x 153cm
Painted for exhibition in Celebration & Compassion at Chappel Galleries in Essex. It was requested by the curator to send a painting which referred to the title and my most spiritual experience is being at one with nature while floating in the sea. My mind rests in the moment, maybe it is the cold or the perilous waves which keeps it there and I’m at my happiest.
It is very fashionable at the moment to cold water swim, I’ve been doing it since I was a child and this painting is a celebration of my experience of the natural phenomenon. The details of jellyfish, touching seaweed, rising sun and setting moon, the altocumulus clouds and greenness of the North Sea are all things I have experienced. while swimming at dawn. Painted over three canvases to extend the horizon as far as I can and to show the curve of the wave and earth. Title The Three Marks of Existence refers to the buddhist concept of impermanence.
3 canvases measure 76 x 51 x 4cm each.
