Description
Sea in the Sky II
oil on gesso
30 x 40cm
2026
A painted view I pass often; on the brow of a hill when entering Cromer, I always marvel how the sea hovers high above the town. On a particular day, two ships were conversing on the horizon, almost merging with the sky, and I knew I had to paint it.
Painted with layers of diluted oil, energetic brush work made with a rough hog brush I have had for a long time. Energy is caught in the movement, hinting at trees blowing in the sea breeze, peppered with red brick buildings.
This painting reached the shortlist for the Sir John Hurt Art Prize 2026, organised by Holt Art Projects.
Ready to hang. Sides are slightly paint splattered white gesso.
