Wildken Hill Fire 19.07 Look East

Painting taken from overhead footage published by BBC Look East on 19th July 2022, showing a wildfire taking hold in a recently rewinded are of Norfolk, called Wildken Hill. As the project developed I was keen to explore areas of my home county affected by climate change. The Summer of 2022 had just suffered its hottest temperature ever, reaching 40 degrees for the first time. It resulted in numerous wild fires in the area and further afield, a direct result of the instability created by climate change.

It was painted as part of a project I undertook in 2022 to paint a year of reportage images on the effects of climate change. I painted 46 works in 12 months. You can read more about the project in my News section. From October 2023 – April 2024 the entire project titled You And I Are Earth was exhibited at Firstsite Museum and Gallery in Colchester, Essex, Gallery East in Suffolk, and Anteros in Norwich.

My aim in painting the project was to put a pause on these dramatic images, which are fed to us through our televisions and phones, and can pass us by in under a second. I wanted to see what an entire year of my edit of these images would look like. Spending time with each had a profound effect on me.

All panels are oil on gesso primed braced wood panels, 30 x 40 x 2cm, with clean natural wood edges, ready to hang.
