Willingdon Island

I was inspired by the memory of an amazing sight of a cruise ship travelling at night through Willingdon Island port in India when I travelled there in 2017, to paint this darkly coloured night scene where the water of the Arabian Sea sharply reflects the lights of the ship. It was the last night of my trip to India and felt like a poignant symbol of my leaving that beautiful place.
Using only four colours I have layered subtle shades of paynes grey, ultramarine and prussian blue in the dark night sky which is peppered with clouds and stars and used thickly applied oil for the contrasting lights of the ship, broken up with palms and durian trees in silhouette which mask the foreground.
It is a recent interest of mine to paint the night and experiment with darks. I love layering and playing with the subtle differences in dark shades and shadows.
Painted on a standard canvas with neatly painted Prussian blue edges, professionally framed in a blue/black floater frame,ready to hang.
