oil on wood
30 x 40 cm
2022
During the summer of 2022 Europe suffered extreme temperatures in excess of 40 degrees. As a consequence wildfires prevailed, and this image is a still from a film taken by Cesar Manso on 18th of June in Spain. It depicts firefighters silhouetted against fierce flames engulfing trees at Pumarejo De Tera.
Painted in 2022 as part of a project recording reportage images of climate change. Making work from photos or film entails a process of taking in the power of an image and its importance in the story of climate, but also whether it adds to the project as a whole. Painting from images is a balancing act pf representing what is there but also using paint to express something deeper. The source image is often discarded after a short while to allow the act of painting to dictate.
10% of sales from this project goes to Greenpeace.
