Layered painting of a lone skeleton underneath a wave.
Skeletons entered my work when considering the unknown mysteries of the sea; how we are seduced by its glittering surface, hynotic waves and reflections of the sky, when what is below the surface is unseen. The sea represents fear for may people, they are scared of what it may contain, but for me I find it fascinating, and beautiful that it holds ancient secrets, things we can’t imagine, tales of old, sacred artifacts, answers to long held questions.
The connotations of skeletons is obvious, but I find them humourous; endlessly tumbling about in the waves, succumbing to its power and currents, travelling the world.
Painting in a limited palette of oil, on a braced wood panel with clean bare wood edges, ready to hang.
