Description
Welter Skelter
oil on braced wood panel
45.5 x 61 x 2.5cm
A stylised wave contains tumbling skeletons, while silent ships drift by on the horizon.
The painting addresses the unknown and power of the sea, and our industrialisation of its waters.
It allures to historical tales and classic novels, such as Moby Dick, while exploring our complex relationship with this untameable wilderness. The skeletons joyfully tumble in the waves; they represent me and my love of the sea, but also are genderless, without status or race, therefore could be any one of us.
Painted with diluted oil, in variations of Ultramarine which was mixed into every colour. I work with a tight palette, pushing forward different colours in each painting, yet the core few remain the same, only shifting slowly over time.
On a braced wood panel, with neat, clean natural wood edges, ready to hang.
